Magura Farmers Get Free Seeds, Fertilizer, and Onion Storage Support in New Incentive Drive

by Bangladesh in Focus

An agricultural incentive program has been launched in Magura Sadar Upazila to help raise crop output and support small farmers with free seeds, fertilizer, and modern storage tools. The program is part of the Kharif-1 season support plan for the 2025-26 fiscal year and is aimed at improving farm productivity while easing the pressure of input costs on low-income growers. The distribution effort covers a large number of farmers in the upazila, with 2,000 farmers set to receive support for Aus paddy cultivation and 160 farmers to receive help for mung bean farming. Each of the Aus paddy farmers will get 5 kilograms of Ufshi Aus paddy seed, along with 10 kilograms of DAP fertilizer and 10 kilograms of MOP fertilizer. The mung bean farmers will receive 5 kilograms of mung bean seed, 10 kilograms of DAP fertilizer, and 5 kilograms of MOP fertilizer each. In addition to crop input support, the program also includes a modern solution for onion storage. Forty farmers will receive air flow machines with a storage capacity of 12,000 kilograms each, which can help reduce post-harvest loss and improve the way onions are kept for later sale. This kind of support is important for farmers who often face challenges from rising prices, weather changes, and storage problems. By giving inputs at no cost, the program can help farmers start the season on time, use better quality seeds, and plan their fields with more confidence. The onion storage machines are also valuable because they can protect produce from damage and allow farmers to sell at better times instead of being forced to sell quickly after harvest. Local officials said the program reflects farmer-friendly policies that are meant to improve livelihoods and strengthen food production in rural areas. The event brought together public representatives, agriculture department staff, and beneficiary farmers, showing strong local interest in the initiative. For many families in Magura, this support can make a real difference, not only by lowering farming costs but also by encouraging better farming methods and more stable earnings. If the program works well, it may help create a model for how simple public support can improve both crop production and farmer income at the local level. It also shows how practical farming help, when timed well, can support both food security and rural development in a way farmers can feel directly in their daily work.
