Rajshahi University hosting Model UN conference to train students in diplomacy

by Bangladesh in Focus

Rajshahi University is set to host the ninth edition of its flagship Model United Nations conference, RUMUN 2026, giving students a four-day platform to practice diplomacy, policy debate, and public speaking in a setting that mirrors real international decision-making. The event will simulate United Nations structures, rules, and diplomatic procedures, creating a learning space where participants can think through global problems in a formal and practical way. Organisers said the conference will open at the university’s Senate Building and will bring together more than 300 students from over 40 institutions across the country, making it one of the largest student-led Model UN gatherings in Bangladesh. The theme for this year’s conference is “Ensuring Economic Accountability through Fair Market Policies and Multilateral Resource Allocation Frameworks in the Context of Global Multipolarity,” a topic that links economics, fairness, and global cooperation. Eight committees will be simulated during the conference, including the United Nations Security Council, NATO, the UN General Assembly Fifth Committee, the UN Human Rights Council, UNCTAD, APEC, the International Press, and a specialised committee for Bangladesh affairs. That wide range of forums means students will not only debate international politics, but also trade, budgets, human rights, reporting, and national policy issues. The organisers said the aim is to help young people build leadership, critical thinking, and global awareness while also learning how complex international systems work. RUMUNA, the organising body behind the event, has been active since 2013 and has already held eight national Model UN conferences after starting its first regional conference in 2015. Its long-running work shows that the university has built a steady tradition of student diplomacy and intellectual exchange. The closing ceremony will be held at the Senate Building, where the university vice-chancellor will attend as chief guest, along with the pro-vice-chancellors as special guests. For students, the conference is more than a competition. It is a chance to speak with confidence, solve problems with others, and understand how policy choices shape real lives. It also helps connect campus learning with the wider world, which can be valuable for those hoping to work in diplomacy, development, media, research, public service, or international business. With its mix of debate, teamwork, and policy simulation, RUMUN 2026 is expected to give participants both practical experience and a stronger sense of how young voices can contribute to global discussion.
