A papaya farming success story in Khagrachhari is giving a small village a new sense of hope, as young farmer Remrachai Marma has helped turn a poor farming area into a place of rising income and fresh opportunity. In Durchhari village of Manikchhari upazila, his work has encouraged many other families to try papaya farming and earn more from land that once brought only limited returns. Marma began with just 200 papaya trees while he was still a student, and after leaving school he focused fully on agriculture. His farm has since grown to about 3,000 trees on 10 acres of land, and this year he earned Tk 20 lakh from papayas, with another Tk 5 lakh worth of fruit still growing. His success spread quickly after he shared a photo of his garden online, which caught the attention of traders from Dhaka and opened the door to regular sales. That helped him build a stronger market and showed other farmers that papaya could be a profitable crop. The impact has reached beyond his own farm. Neighbors and nearby farmers are now planting their own papaya gardens, including growers such as Rabai Marma and Anghalapru Marma, who see a better chance to make a steady income. In another nearby area, Joyram Chakma and Kalparanjan Chakma turned 4.5 acres of unused land into a papaya farm, and with an investment of Tk 15 lakh they have already sold papayas worth Tk 65 lakh while sending fruit to Chattogram, Feni and Dhaka. Another young farmer, Debabrata Chakma, now grows papayas on 30 acres and earns a weekly income that supports his family and future plans. Local agriculture officials say the change has helped reduce unemployment in the village, especially among young people who now see farming as a real business rather than a last choice. Around 436 hectares of land in the district are now under papaya cultivation, with about 350 farmers growing the fruit and the agriculture office providing advice and support. The growing interest shows how one successful farmer can inspire a whole community, create jobs, and turn fallow land into a source of pride and profit for rural families..
