Malaysia Healthcare Deepens Bangladesh Outreach Ahead of Dhaka Medical Tourism Week

by Bangladesh in Focus

Malaysia Healthcare is stepping up its outreach in Bangladesh as it prepares for Malaysia Healthcare Week in Dhaka, a new effort designed to connect Bangladeshi patients, facilitators and travel partners with Malaysian hospitals. The move comes as many Bangladeshi patients look beyond their usual treatment routes for specialised care abroad, especially after visa restrictions made long-standing travel patterns more difficult.

For years, many patients from Bangladesh went to India for medical care because it was nearby and had a well-known referral system. But changing travel conditions have pushed families and healthcare middlemen to search for other destinations in the region. Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council says this has created a timely opening to build stronger ties with Bangladesh and present Malaysia as a reliable option for treatment overseas.

The Dhaka programme is part of Malaysia Year of Medical Tourism 2026, a national push launched in July 2025 to promote the country’s healthcare travel industry. Under the “Healing Meets Hospitality” approach, Malaysia is highlighting internationally accredited hospitals, specialist doctors and patient-focused services as its main strengths. The plan is to bring Malaysia’s healthcare system closer to Dhaka through direct meetings and partnerships rather than relying only on general promotion.

According to the press release, Malaysia Healthcare Week in Dhaka will create a space where Bangladeshi facilitators and potential patients can meet Malaysian medical institutions directly. Organisers say the goal is to improve referral networks, raise awareness and make it easier for people to understand the treatment options available in Malaysia. The council also hopes the event will help expand cooperation between the two countries in health travel.

The healthcare tourism industry in Malaysia is being showcased as a robust and expanding field. In 2025, it generated RM3.34 billion in revenue and welcomed 1.84 million healthcare travellers, numbers the council says show international confidence in the country’s medical system. Officials say that growth is supported by modern hospitals, advanced medical technology and a care model designed around the patient experience.

The council says Bangladesh remains an important market because demand for overseas treatment is still strong, especially for complex care such as heart treatment, cancer care, organ transplants and advanced surgery. Malaysia argues that it offers a practical mix of skilled specialists, competitive costs and easy access through frequent flights between Dhaka and Kuala Lumpur. With the Dhaka outreach, the council hopes to strengthen trust, widen patient access and build lasting health links across the region.
