Sunflower Farming Blossoms in Narail as Farmers Find a Profitable New Crop

by Bangladesh in Focus

Sunflower farming is spreading quickly across three upazilas of Narail, where more farmers are choosing the bright oilseed crop for its low cost, solid yield, and strong market value. The growing interest comes as edible oil prices stay high, making sunflower a smart option for families who want both income and home-grown oil. In places like Chanchra village in Sadar upazila, the wide yellow fields have also become a local attraction, drawing visitors who enjoy walking among the flowers and taking pictures of the scenic landscape. Agriculture officials say the crop area has expanded to 191 hectares across the district’s farming zones, with Sadar leading the way, followed by Lohagara and Kalia. Farmers are expecting a total harvest of 443 metric tons, and the planted area has grown much more than before, showing that the crop is gaining trust in the field. Many growers say they are encouraged by the support they received through seed and fertilizer incentives, along with regular advice from agriculture officers. For first-time farmer Shahidullah, the crop has already brought hope, while Abdullah Molya says careful planting and row management are helping improve the harvest. Officials note that improved types such as Bari Suryajmukhi-3 and hybrid Haisan-36 are being used more widely, which may help raise output further. Local agriculture workers say the crop is becoming more popular because sunflower oil is seen as useful for cooking and is often linked by farmers to better health and a cleaner taste. The growing fields are now creating value in more than one way: they are giving farmers a source of income, helping meet local oil needs, and offering a new scenic spot for visitors. With good field conditions and rising interest among growers, Narail may see even more sunflower land in the coming seasons, turning a once small crop into a promising part of the district’s farm economy.
