BEPZA Economic Zone Saves Tk134 Crore While Attracting Investment

by Bangladesh in Focus

The BEPZA Economic Zone in Mirsarai is moving forward with new factories and investment while saving about Tk134 crore from the approved cost of its first development phase. The project was planned at roughly Tk1,303 crore, but the first phase is being completed for about Tk1,169 crore. The lower cost is significant because economic zones require large public investment in roads, utilities, drainage, land preparation and other shared services before private factories can operate. Saving money while keeping the project moving can improve the value of public spending and leave more room for future development. The zone has developed 539 industrial plots, with 401 already allocated. Dozens of lease agreements have been signed, and 14 companies have begun production. Investment proposals linked to the zone total around $1.62 billion, while the full group of planned factories could create close to 200,000 jobs if projects are completed. Existing producers are already making garments, lingerie, footwear, leather goods, furniture and packaging products. Together, operating firms have exported goods worth more than $58 million and employ around 4,500 people. These early numbers show how an economic zone can move from land development into real production step by step. Mirsarai is important because it gives companies access to a planned industrial area where infrastructure and regulatory services can be developed around manufacturing needs. That can be more efficient than factories growing in scattered locations without proper roads, utilities or waste systems. A successful zone can also encourage supplier businesses to locate nearby, creating wider activity in transport, warehousing, maintenance, food services and housing. The biggest gains will come if promised investments move into construction and production on schedule. Investors need reliable power, gas, water, customs support and predictable rules. Environmental management is also essential as the number of factories increases. Bangladesh’s export economy is still concentrated in a few major product groups, so zones like Mirsarai offer an opportunity to attract different kinds of manufacturing. The combination of cost savings, growing plot allocation and active production gives the project a positive start. If infrastructure quality remains strong and investors receive efficient services, the BEPZA Economic Zone can become a major industrial base that creates jobs, expands exports and brings new manufacturing technology into Bangladesh. Measured carefully, these gains can support confidence without creating unrealistic expectations. Maintaining public trust will be just as important as expanding capacity. That is how a promising announcement can become practical economic progress. Progress will be most valuable when businesses, workers and communities benefit together. A steady focus on quality can help this progress remain useful over the long term. The broader opportunity is to build capacity that remains useful long after the first investment.
