Bangladesh’s ICT Sector Aims for $5 Billion Export Target by 2025

by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangladesh’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector is experiencing rapid expansion and is now poised to reach an ambitious export earnings goal of $5 billion by the end of 2025. This growth reflects the nation’s increasing digital capabilities and its strategic focus on becoming a regional ICT powerhouse. The Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS), along with the ICT Division, has been driving initiatives to support this growth. These include capacity building for local tech companies, policy support, and human resource development. Already, the sector employs nearly 2 million people, with projections to increase that number to over 2.5 million in the next year, as noted by ICT State Minister Zunaid Ahmed Palak (The Financial Express). A significant milestone in this journey was the official launch of Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, in Bangladesh on May 20, 2025. The introduction of high-speed satellite internet is expected to provide reliable connectivity even in remote and underserved areas. Experts believe this will be a game-changer in supporting rural ICT firms, freelancers, and startups by ensuring access to global clients and digital marketplaces (Reuters). To support this momentum, the government is strengthening digital education across all levels. Investments are being made in ICT labs, coding bootcamps, and university-level technical training to create a steady pipeline of skilled professionals. Public-private partnerships are also fostering innovation hubs and startup incubators across the country. Moreover, several international clients are outsourcing software development, cybersecurity, and data services to Bangladeshi firms due to their competitive pricing and growing talent pool. This has allowed Bangladeshi tech companies to compete in global markets alongside peers from India and Vietnam. As digital infrastructure improves and skilled manpower increases, Bangladesh’s ICT sector is moving beyond back-office support to high-value services like AI, machine learning, and fintech solutions. With the right policy support and industry collaboration, the $5 billion export target is not just achievable—it’s within reach.
