Electro Mart Group has received an SDG Brand Champion Award for its work in sustainable manufacturing, recognising efforts to make electronics and home appliances more responsibly in Bangladesh. The company manufactures and markets products under the Konka, Gree, and Haiko brands. Its award was among 59 brand initiatives recognised for supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals in Bangladesh. The company says its activities connect with goals covering clean energy, decent work, industry and innovation, responsible production, and climate action. These areas are closely linked to the future of appliance manufacturing because products such as air conditioners and refrigerators use electricity throughout their working lives. Making them more energy efficient can lower household power use and reduce pressure on the national grid. Electro Mart’s sustainability work includes producing energy-saving appliances, adopting greener technologies, and using more environmentally responsible materials and product designs. The business has also moved from depending mainly on imported finished goods toward local production at its manufacturing facility in Narayanganj. Through technology-sharing arrangements with Chinese partners, it now makes Gree air conditioners and Konka refrigerators in Bangladesh. Local manufacturing can create jobs, build technical skills, support suppliers, and reduce the need to import complete products. The company reports that its operations have created more than 7,000 direct jobs and over 10,000 indirect jobs. These opportunities can reach factory workers, engineers, technicians, sales teams, transport providers, repair specialists, and many small service businesses. After-sales support is also an important part of responsible manufacturing. Appliances that can be repaired and maintained properly often last longer, saving customers money and reducing waste. Awards can highlight good work, but lasting value comes from continued improvement. Manufacturers need to measure energy use, water use, waste, emissions, and product performance instead of relying only on broad claims. Safe working conditions, worker training, quality control, and proper recycling systems should remain part of the same effort. Clear energy labels can help customers compare products and choose models that cost less to operate. Companies can also design appliances that use safer materials and are easier to repair or recycle. The recognition gives Electro Mart a reason to strengthen these practices and share useful lessons with the wider industry. As Bangladesh’s middle class grows, demand for cooling and household appliances is likely to rise. Meeting that demand through efficient local manufacturing can support business growth without ignoring environmental responsibility. The award shows how brands can connect innovation, employment, customer service, and resource efficiency in one practical industrial strategy. The wider appliance sector can learn from this example by investing in efficient motors, better insulation, careful packaging, and take-back systems for old products. Partnerships with technical institutes can prepare young people for factory, engineering, and repair jobs.
