Bangladesh is preparing to launch a major shift in its energy landscape with the upcoming operation of the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, the first of its kind in the country. Located in Pabna’s Ishwardi upazila, the project is designed to generate 2,400 megawatts (MW) of electricity — enough to support millions of homes and businesses across the country. This significant project features two VVER-1200 reactors, which were created with assistance from Rosatom, the nuclear agency owned by the Russian government. Each reactor has a capacity of 1,200 MW. Once it is fully functioning, Rooppur will become one of the most dependable and consistent sources of electricity in the country’s power network. One of the most promising aspects of the Rooppur plant is its contribution to clean energy goals. In contrast to power plants fueled by coal or oil, nuclear energy generated during its operation does not emit any greenhouse gases. This helps Bangladesh reduce its carbon footprint while meeting its rising energy needs. At present, fossil fuels are the main source of electricity for the country. Rooppur aims to change that by introducing a large-scale, long-term solution that’s also environmentally friendly. The plant has been under construction since 2017, and the first unit is expected to start generating power in 2025. The next unit is planned to take place within the upcoming year. The Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) and international partners have emphasized that strict safety standards are being followed, based on International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) guidelines. Beyond energy generation, Rooppur is expected to create thousands of jobs and promote the development of skilled professionals in nuclear science and engineering. Local universities and technical institutes have already started training programs to prepare students for future careers in the nuclear sector. The project is also a milestone in Bangladesh’s partnership with Russia, which provided technical expertise, training, and financing through a state loan. Once completed, Rooppur will not only address the nation’s power shortages but also enhance its energy security and reduce dependence on imported fuels. As Bangladesh moves toward industrial growth and smart infrastructure, demand for electricity will continue to rise. The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant represents a forward-thinking dedication to energy and the country’s development. With its launch, Bangladesh is taking a bold step toward a cleaner, more stable energy future.
