Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant Completes Key Testing Phase

by Bangladesh in Focus

The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) in Bangladesh has achieved a significant milestone by finishing the cold and hot functional tests for Unit 1, which moves the project nearer to becoming fully operational. These tests involved a thorough cleaning process of the fresh steam pipelines in the turbine compartment, an essential step to ensure safety and reliability before the plant starts producing electricity. During the tests, fresh steam at a pressure of 2.0 MPa and a temperature of 200°C was released into the turbine’s pipelines to remove moisture, dirt, and any mechanical residues that might interfere with the system’s performance. The steam was safely discharged into the atmosphere, creating expected noise levels considered safe for nearby communities. This initial phase ensures that the steam lines are free of contaminants and ready to supply clean, high-pressure steam to the turbines. Following this, a second, more intensive round of testing will take place. It will involve a larger volume of steam to further clean the main pipelines and optimize the performance of various equipment under conditions similar to actual operation. These critical functional tests are part of the final preparation steps needed to commission Power Unit 1 and connect it to Bangladesh’s national power grid. The RNPP is based on the modern Russian VVER-1200 design, known for its advanced safety features and high efficiency. Once operational, the plant is expected to supply up to 10 percent of Bangladesh’s current electricity demand, a significant boost for the country’s energy security and efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. The project reflects Bangladesh’s commitment to clean and sustainable energy by adopting cutting-edge nuclear technology. The successful completion of the cold and hot functional tests demonstrates that the plant is meeting international safety and operational standards, which will build public and stakeholder confidence as it moves toward full operation. With these tests behind it, Rooppur is on track to become a landmark facility for Bangladesh’s energy future, supporting economic growth, industrial development, and environmental goals. The next stages will involve further testing, regulatory reviews, and final commissioning before the plant begins regular electricity production. This progress marks a proud achievement for Bangladesh and highlights the country’s ability to manage complex infrastructure projects with global partners.
