Farmers in Rajshahi are now turning their attention to cultivating exotic mango varieties, a shift that is bringing fresh excitement and better income opportunities to the region. According to a new report from the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM), the cultivation of high-value mango varieties like Amrapali, Baganapalli, Mallika, and Himshagor is gaining ground among farmers in the area, especially in Bagha, Charghat, and Puthia upazilas. Traditionally, Rajshahi has been known for its large-scale production of popular local mangoes such as Langra, Gopalbhog, and Khirshapat. However, with increasing awareness about market demand and potential export value, farmers are exploring exotic types that can fetch higher prices in both local and international markets. These newer varieties not only have longer shelf lives but also offer richer taste and better appearance, making them more suitable for export. Local agriculture officials are supporting the move by offering training and technical help to farmers. These training sessions focus on grafting techniques, orchard management, and pest control methods. In Rajshahi, the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) has been distributing seedlings of unusual mango varieties to promote their broader use. One farmer, Mojibur Rahman from Bagha, shared his experience. He started with just 10 exotic mango trees three years ago. Now, he has more than 200 trees, and his income has doubled. “The demand is growing, and these mangoes sell at a higher price,” he said with pride. Another key reason for the popularity of these mangoes is their appeal to health-conscious consumers. Many of the exotic types have less fiber and a sweeter flavor, making them a favorite among urban buyers and supermarkets. The packaging and branding of mangoes have also improved, with some farmers using QR codes and eco-friendly materials to appeal to a modern customer base. The GSM report also notes that digital platforms and mobile-based market access tools are playing an important role in this growth. Farmers now receive price updates, cultivation tips, and weather forecasts directly on their phones. This digital support helps them make better decisions and reduce risks during harvest season. Experts believe that the rise in exotic mango farming can make Rajshahi a bigger player in the global mango market. With more focus on quality and export readiness, farmers here are on the path to a brighter future. This trend not only supports better income but also brings innovation to traditional agriculture.
