Dhaka’s groundbreaking Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) Line-6 is set to significantly enhance its commuter experience with the upcoming introduction of a ‘Universal Ticketing System’ (UTS). This innovative system, designed to modernize fare collection and alleviate passenger congestion, marks another forward stride in Bangladesh’s journey towards a more efficient and technologically integrated urban transport network. The new Universal Ticketing System promises a seamless and convenient travel experience for millions of daily commuters. A key highlight of the UTS is its expanded accessibility, with plans to install four additional easy access gates at each stationโtwo for entrance and two for exitโworking in tandem with the existing infrastructure. This expansion is specifically aimed at streamlining passenger flow during peak hours, ensuring quicker and more organized entry and exit points. Embracing digital convenience, the UTS will empower passengers with flexible payment options. Commuters will soon have the ability to pay their fares directly using their bank debit or credit cards, a move that aligns with modern digital payment trends. Furthermore, the system will allow for the purchase of single journey tickets through mobile banking platforms, providing an unparalleled level of convenience and reducing reliance on traditional ticket counters. This multi-faceted payment approach is set to significantly reduce queues and enhance overall operational efficiency at MRT stations. According to Nasir Uddin Ahmed, Director (Operation & Maintenance) of Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL), a tender has already been floated for the implementation of this cutting-edge system. In a planned decision, the DMTCL will avoid investing directly in the project. Rather, the contractor chosen will undertake the installation of both equipment and software, along with managing all transactions at their own expense. This arrangement, where the contractor receives a portion of the income from ticket sales based on their bid, reflects an innovative public-private partnership model aimed at accelerating modernization without direct government capital expenditure. The Central Procurement Technical Unit (CPTU) initiated the tender on April 28, drawing considerable interest from approximately 30 domestic and foreign companies. The introduction of the Universal Ticketing System on MRT Line-6 is a testament to Bangladesh’s commitment to urban development and leveraging technology to improve public services. It represents a constructive step towards creating a more efficient, modern, and user-friendly public transportation system, ultimately benefiting the lives of countless commuters in Dhaka.
