Dhaka University is on the verge of significant changes, as a development project worth Tk 2,840 crore has received approval. This initiative aims to upgrade its old infrastructure and tackle the persistent issue of insufficient housing for students. The plan includes constructing six new academic buildings and nine residential halls, significantly increasing housing capacity for over 7,700 students. University officials say this is the largest campus development initiative in decades, aiming to create a modern academic environment that meets international standards. The new halls will provide safe and comfortable living spaces, particularly for female students who have long faced overcrowded conditions and limited facilities. Existing dormitories will be expanded, while outdated structures will be replaced with high-rise buildings equipped with modern amenities. Academic upgrades under the project include new state-of-the-art buildings for multiple faculties, improved laboratories, digital classrooms, and enhanced research spaces to foster innovation and quality education. Additional facilities such as a central administrative complex, a student union building, a dedicated medical center, a modern mosque, and recreational spaces are also part of the plan. Authorities have prioritized sustainability, with green spaces, improved drainage, waste management systems, and restored water bodies to create a healthier campus environment. University leaders emphasize that this project is a long-overdue solution to persistent challenges, especially the shortage of student housing that has forced many to share cramped rooms or live off-campus under poor conditions.
