Bangladesh’s ready-made garment (RMG) sector has recorded an impressive 8.84% growth in export earnings during the fiscal year 2024–25, underscoring the industry’s resilience, competitiveness, and continued dominance in global apparel markets. The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) reported that the total exports of ready-made garments (RMG) rose to $47.39 billion, an increase from last year’s $43.55 billion. This ongoing growth solidifies Bangladesh’s status as the second-largest exporter of apparel in the world, coming after China. The sector continues to serve as a critical pillar of the national economy, accounting for over 80% of the country’s total export earnings and employing millions of workers—especially women—in thousands of factories nationwide. Industry experts credit the growth to diversification in product lines, increased demand from key markets like the United States, European Union, and Canada, and improvements in sustainability and compliance. Factories in Bangladesh are increasingly adopting green technologies and international certifications, making them more appealing to global buyers focused on ethical sourcing. Value-added products such as activewear, outerwear, and knitwear have seen a noticeable rise in demand. Local manufacturers have also expanded capacity in design, innovation, and supply chain efficiency, enabling faster turnaround and meeting evolving fashion trends more effectively. The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) noted that strong buyer confidence, coupled with competitive pricing and high-quality standards, helped drive this year’s growth. Additionally, infrastructure improvements and digitization of customs procedures have reduced bottlenecks at ports and improved overall export logistics. Government policies, including incentives for new market exploration, duty drawbacks, and export-friendly finance schemes, have played a key role in supporting the sector’s upward trajectory. The launch of the National Export Strategy also contributed to identifying priority actions for long-term growth and global competitiveness. As the global fashion industry increasingly prioritizes sustainability, Bangladesh’s leadership in green manufacturing stands out. The country is now home to over 200 LEED-certified green garment factories, the highest number in the world, reinforcing its reputation as a responsible apparel hub. Looking ahead, sector leaders aim to cross the $50 billion mark in export earnings, with a strategic focus on digital transformation, workforce upskilling, and market diversification. The growth in FY25 is not just a financial success—it is a reflection of the industry’s adaptability and Bangladesh’s rising stature in global trade.
