Bangladesh Unveils 100-Day Energy Plan to Secure Power and Boost Gas Exploration

by Bangladesh in Focus

The government has announced an ambitious 100-day energy push that aims to keep the lights on, support farmers, and prepare the country for future growth through a series of fast-track steps in power, gas, and fuel supply. At the heart of the plan is a fresh round of bidding for gas exploration both on land and at sea, with a promise to quickly finalise new Production Sharing Contracts, or PSCs, so that international and local companies know the rules before they invest. Officials say they want the bidding to move ahead within the year and for long-term gas deals to follow soon after, helping to increase domestic supply and reduce pressure from expensive fuel imports. The move comes after an earlier attempt at an offshore bidding round stalled, and leaders now see this renewed push as a chance to make better use of the country’s maritime areas. Alongside gas exploration, the roadmap sets a clear priority on ensuring smooth electricity supply during the upcoming fasting month and the peak irrigation season, when homes, mosques, shops, and farms all need reliable power at the same time. A major expansion of fuel refining is also on the table, with plans to raise capacity from fifteen lakh tonnes a year to forty-five lakh tonnes, supported by interested development partners, so that more crude oil can be processed at home instead of abroad. The plan includes detailed geological surveys for coal and other mineral resources, including heavy minerals in rivers and offshore zones, so that future decisions are based on stronger scientific data. Policy reform is another key pillar, with changes being prepared to important energy laws and the main master plan to make the sector more efficient and transparent. One proposal is to split Titas Gas Transmission and Distribution Company into three separate firms to improve service and planning, while eight subsidiaries of the national oil and fuel corporation would be consolidated into five larger, stronger companies. Capacity building will support all these steps, with seminars, in-house training, and new laboratory facilities at the petroleum institute to upgrade skills in testing, safety, and research. If the different parts of the plan are carried out on time, experts believe the 100-day energy push could cut unplanned power cuts, give farmers more confidence during the dry season, and create a better climate for factories and small businesses, while also laying the groundwork for cleaner, smarter energy choices in the years ahead. Success will depend on careful coordination between ministries, clear communication with citizens, and regular follow-up on each target, but the early message from the energy team is that they intend to act quickly and keep people informed as progress is made at each stage.
