Bangladesh Universities Show Strengths and Gaps in THE Subject Rankings

by Bangladesh in Focus

The Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject were released and they show where universities in Bangladesh stand across many fields, giving students, teachers and campus leaders a clear map of strengths and areas to strengthen. The rankings list multiple institutions in subjects such as business and economics, computer science, education studies, engineering, life sciences, medicine, physical sciences and social sciences, while arts and humanities, law and psychology had no Bangladeshi institutions ranked. In business and economics several private and public universities appear on the table, with North South University and the University of Dhaka listed among the higher bands and BRAC University, Daffodil International University and the University of Chittagong also included in broader groups. Computer science shows a strong local presence with Jahangirnagar University in a higher band and several technical and private universities appearing across other ranking bands. Education studies noted the University of Dhaka among the ranked names, giving it a national lead in that field. Engineering had the largest list of local entries, with the University of Dhaka and several engineering universities and institutes appearing across mid and wider global bands and other institutions like MIST included in longer ranges. Life sciences and medicine both include several Bangladeshi universities, showing growing capacity in agricultural, biological and health research at institutions such as Bangladesh Agricultural University, Jahangirnagar University, Daffodil International University and others that meet the ranking criteria. Physical sciences and social sciences also list a number of universities, including strong showings from technical universities and newer science and technology campuses, while social sciences feature both private and public universities that have increased research and teaching output. Not every subject saw local listings, but the fields that did include Bangladeshi universities suggest where local strengths are building and where investment in research, teaching and international collaboration is paying off. For students this information makes it easier to compare course strengths and pick institutions that match their study goals, and for universities the rankings offer clear signals about where to focus efforts like research funding, partnerships and graduate training. If universities act on these signals, students may find more job chances and research links can grow faster locally. University leaders said they will use the list to improve teaching, research support and industry links so students gain better experience. Experts say regular appearance in subject rankings helps attract international collaborators, funding and better teachers, and it can help raise standards across campuses when universities learn from each other and share good practice. Overall the subject rankings give a useful, practical snapshot that universities, students and policy makers can use to build stronger programs, support better research and help more graduates succeed in the global job market.
