by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangladesh has successfully arranged a major loan deal with Japan, amounting to about $630 million, to fund the building of a dual gauge double track for the railway segment between Joydebpur and Ishurdi. The agreement was formalised today (27 June) at the Economic Relations Division, marking a major milestone in Bangladesh’s infrastructure development. This railway expansion project represents a strategic investment in Bangladesh’s transportation network. The Japan International Cooperation Agency is providing Bangladesh with a loan of up to $637.6 million for the Joydebpur – Ishurdi track-doubling initiative. This project will greatly improve the railway capacity and connection within the country, as well as with its neighboring countries. The project addresses a critical infrastructure need that has been under development for several years. A few years ago, China unexpectedly stopped funding the Joydebpur-Ishwardi Double Line Project. Now, with help from Japan, Bangladesh Railway (BR) is working to bring the project back to life. This partnership with Japan ensures the project can move forward with reliable funding and expertise. The economic benefits of this railway expansion are substantial. Worth around $1.7 billion (Taka 14,250.61 crore), double tracking of the 162.03 kilometer will enhance Bangladesh Railway’s line capacity to service more passengers and increase trains carrying cargo. The improved infrastructure will support both passenger transport and freight operations, boosting economic activity along the route. This railway line holds strategic importance for regional connectivity. This line is part of the proposed trans-Asian railway network, and the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation initiatives. The project will strengthen Bangladesh’s position as a regional transport hub and improve trade connections with neighboring countries. The partnership with Japan reflects broader cooperation between the two nations. Japan is set to offer $1.063 billion to Bangladesh, which will aid in budget support, railway improvements, and educational initiatives. This move highlights Japan’s dedication to helping Bangladesh achieve its development objectives. This comprehensive support package shows the strength of bilateral relations. Railway officials expect significant operational improvements once the project is completed. The amount of freight in this area is expected to grow by over 5 percent each year, which will help Bangladesh Railway earn more money. The enhanced capacity will enable more efficient movement of goods and passengers across the country. The detailed design work for the project is already underway, with implementation expected to begin soon. This strategic railway expansion will contribute to Bangladesh’s economic growth while improving connectivity for millions of citizens and businesses across the region.
