The Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) has moved forward with plans to transition management of the New Mooring Container Terminal (NCT), one of Bangladesh’s busiest port facilities. The government has recommended that Bangladesh Navy temporarily operate the terminal for six months, as the contract with local firm Saif Powertec Ltd expires on July 7. This significant development comes as the port authority seeks to modernize operations at the crucial terminal. In 2007, the Chattogram Port Authority invested Tk4,000 crore to set up NCT, which was built to manage 1.1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) each year. The facility has become essential for Bangladesh’s trade operations, particularly supporting the country’s thriving ready-made garment (RMG) sector. Saif Powertec Limited has successfully managed the terminal since 2007, handling massive container volumes over nearly two decades. The company processed 11,977,922 TEUs of containers at NCT between 2007 and 2024, representing a significant achievement for both the company and Bangladesh’s port infrastructure. The transition reflects broader efforts to strengthen Bangladesh’s maritime capabilities while addressing ongoing concerns within the RMG sector. The ready-made garment industry relies heavily on efficient port operations for both importing raw materials and exporting finished products to global markets. During the interim period, the Bangladesh Navy’s management will ensure continued smooth operations while the port authority finalizes long-term arrangements. This approach demonstrates the government’s commitment to maintaining operational excellence during the transition phase. The move comes amid broader modernization efforts at Chittagong Port, with authorities working to enhance capacity and efficiency. By 2040, as the lifespans of existing terminals end, new facilities like the planned Bay Terminal will meet growing demands, featuring Bangladesh’s first Green Port with 30% of the area dedicated to forestation. This strategic transition represents an important step in Bangladesh’s efforts to maintain its position as a major player in global trade. The Navy’s temporary oversight will provide stability while ensuring the terminal continues supporting the country’s economic growth and export industries.
