Bangla QR Expands Cashless Payments to 800,000 bKash Merchants

by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangla QR is now available at more than 800,000 bKash merchant outlets across Bangladesh, making cashless payments easier for shoppers and small businesses in cities, towns, and rural communities. Customers can scan one standard QR code and pay through bKash or another supported digital wallet, which removes the need for merchants to display several different payment codes. The large rollout brings simple digital payment access to neighbourhood grocery shops, pharmacies, restaurants, hotels, supermarkets, lifestyle stores, and major retail chains. Transactions through the bKash merchant network now average more than Tk200 crore each day, showing that digital payments are becoming part of everyday buying and selling. For customers, QR payments can be faster than counting cash or waiting for change. The payment is recorded in the app, helping people check spending and keep a clear history. For merchants, the system reduces the need to handle large amounts of cash and can make payment collection more organised. bKash has also introduced digital payment speakers that give an instant voice confirmation when money reaches a merchant account. This small feature can save time at busy counters and reduce confusion, especially when several customers are paying at once. The rollout supports Bangladesh Bank’s goal of building a more connected and less cash-dependent payment system. Bangla QR is designed to be interoperable, meaning one code can accept payments from different approved services. This can make digital payments more useful because customers are not limited to the same wallet used by the shop. Promotional offers at thousands of outlets may also encourage first-time users to try the service and learn how QR payments work. Another useful step is a pilot programme with BRAC Bank that offers eligible merchants instant, short-term digital loans. Loan decisions can be based on transaction records and merchant ratings, allowing suitable small businesses to access collateral-free finance through their accounts. A shop owner may use the money to restock popular products, repair equipment, or manage a short cash gap. Responsible checks and clear repayment terms will remain important so borrowing stays helpful. The expansion can also improve financial inclusion by giving small merchants a digital sales record. Over time, this record may help them understand business performance and qualify for other financial services. Security awareness is still necessary. Users should check the merchant name before paying, protect their PIN, and report suspicious activity quickly. With strong customer support and trained merchants, Bangla QR can make daily payments safer, quicker, and more convenient. The nationwide rollout shows how simple technology can connect customers, businesses, banks, and mobile wallets in one practical payment system. It can also help merchants reduce mistakes, serve customers faster, and build trust through clear records of every completed sale.
