Active Preparations Underway to Connect Rooppur NPP to National Grid of Bangladesh

by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangladesh is on the cusp of a transformative leap in its energy landscape as active preparations to connect the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to the national grid are well underway. This monumental project, the nationโ€™s first foray into nuclear energy, recently marked a crucial milestone with the successful commissioning of the main and auxiliary transformers for its first unit. This development brings Bangladesh significantly closer to realizing a dream of sustainable and robust energy security. The commissioning of these powerful transformers is a testament to the meticulous planning and extensive efforts involved in this technologically advanced venture. These main step-up transformers are ingeniously designed to convert the 24-kilovolt electricity generated by the plantโ€™s turbine into 400 kilovolts, making it suitable for efficient, long-distance transmission across the national grid. Each transformer boasts an impressive capacity to transmit up to 1,599 megawatts, comfortably exceeding the unit’s designed output of 1,200 megawatts, thereby ensuring both reliability and a built-in surplus. Implemented with technical and financial assistance from the Russian Federation, the Rooppur NPP is set to feature two Generation III+ VVER-1200 reactors, each contributing significantly to Bangladeshโ€™s power generation capacity. The project signifies a deep international collaboration, as highlighted by Alexey Deriy, Vice President for Projects in Bangladesh at Atomstroyexport, who praised the well-coordinated efforts of all teams involved despite logistical and climatic challenges. This spirit of cooperation is foundational to the projectโ€™s success. Along with its technical successes, adding Rooppur NPP to the national grid offers various advantages for Bangladesh. Most importantly, it will provide a stable, baseload power supply, drastically helping to alleviate the nation’s persistent energy deficits and bolstering its energy independence. This reliable power source is crucial for sustaining the rapid pace of industrialization and overall economic growth. Furthermore, nuclear energy offers a clean, low-carbon alternative, aligning with Bangladesh’s commitment to environmental stewardship and its goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The project also serves as a catalyst for technological advancement, fostering significant knowledge transfer and developing a highly skilled workforce capable of operating and maintaining advanced nuclear technology, thereby elevating Bangladesh’s technological capabilities on the global stage. As the plant moves towards its hot functional tests and subsequent fuel loading, the nation anticipates a new era of energy sufficiency, economic dynamism, and sustainable development.
