Food safety must be prioritized if Bangladesh is to strengthen its position in the global food market, a senior government adviser emphasized during a recent national seminar. The remarks come at a time when the country is actively seeking to boost exports of processed food and agricultural products to international buyers. Speaking to stakeholders from agriculture, manufacturing, and export sectors, the adviser stressed that meeting international food safety standards is no longer optionalโit is a necessity for competitive participation in global trade. He highlighted that hygiene, traceability, packaging, and regulatory compliance are essential for building trust with consumers abroad. Bangladesh has made steady progress in food production, but experts noted that without strict adherence to safety protocols, products may face barriers in international markets. The call to action focused on implementing modern practices in farming, storage, processing, and distribution to ensure food remains safe at every stage of the supply chain. Several initiatives have already been launched, including capacity building for food inspectors, lab testing upgrades, and awareness programs for producers. However, the adviser urged both public and private sector collaboration to close remaining gaps and establish a fully transparent, accountable food ecosystem. Participants in the seminar also discussed how digital tools can support food safety. Mobile traceability systems, digital inspection platforms, and QR-code labeling were cited as modern solutions that help exporters prove the quality and safety of their products to buyers overseas. Exporters welcomed the government’s attention to this issue, noting that countries like the UAE, Malaysia, and members of the European Union have strict safety regulations for imported food. By ensuring compliance with global benchmarks such as HACCP (Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points) and ISO standards, Bangladeshi products can earn higher value and wider market access. The government plans to offer more technical support and regulatory guidance to small and medium food processors. This includes training, certifications, and market readiness programs that enable them to meet export requirements without excessive cost burdens. Food safety also plays a major role in public health and domestic confidence. Maintaining high standards in all areas will allow Bangladesh to safeguard its people while also creating export possibilities. This approach will aid in economic diversification and lessen reliance on conventional industries. With rising demand for safe, ethically produced food around the world, Bangladesh has a strong opportunity to emerge as a trusted supplier.
