Making a major step forward in restoring the environment and managing land sustainably, Bangladesh’s Forest Department has launched an extensive tree plantation program on reclaimed land in the Tangail district. This proactive initiative underscores the nation’s unwavering commitment to expanding its green cover, protecting natural resources, and combating illegal encroachment to ensure a healthier ecosystem for future generations. On June 24, 2025, the ambitious plantation initiative started in the Boga Protima region of Baheratali Union, which is part of Sakhipur Upazila. This project successfully recovers around 13 acres of important reserved forest land situated in the MM Chala Beat of Baheratali Range. This land had been freed from illegal occupation following a decisive joint operation conducted on May 31, demonstrating effective governance and enforcement in safeguarding public and environmental assets. The program aims to plant an impressive 11,000 saplings, comprising a diverse array of fruit-bearing, timber, and medicinal trees. This strategic selection is designed to enrich the local biodiversity, provide economic benefits to the community, and enhance the ecological resilience of the area. The large-scale effort is being carried out with the dedicated involvement of around 200 local workers, highlighting a collaborative approach that brings together government agencies and community participation for environmental upliftment. This tree plantation initiative serves multiple crucial purposes. Primarily, it is a direct measure to restore the ecological balance of the recovered forest land, revitalizing an area previously impacted by illegal activities. Beyond this, it significantly contributes to the overall environmental well-being of the region, playing a role in carbon sequestration, soil conservation, and habitat creation for wildlife. Such actions are integral to Bangladesh’s broader climate resilience strategies and its commitment to global environmental goals. The inauguration ceremony was graced by the presence of key local government and law enforcement officials, including Sakhipur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdullah Al Roni, Baheratali Range Officer Md. Imran Hossain, along with Mohammad Abul Kalam Bhuiyan, who is the Officer-in-Charge at Sakhipur Police Station. Their participation underscores the coordinated governance efforts behind this successful recovery and reforestation mission, setting a positive precedent for environmental protection across the country.
