Accelerating Green Jobs and Skills in Bangladesh’s Creative Economy

by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangladesh is strategically investing in the future of its creative economy, particularly by accelerating the development of green jobs and essential skills within its burgeoning content industry. This forward-looking initiative aims to position Bangladesh as a competitive player in the global entertainment sector, fostering sustainable growth and creating valuable employment opportunities for its youth. At the heart of this transformation is a focus on the post-production segment of filmmaking, encompassing vital areas such as editing, color grading, sound design, and mixing. These specialized fields are crucial for bringing captivating stories to life and represent a multi-billion-dollar global market. By nurturing talent and adopting sustainable practices in these areas, Bangladesh is not only enhancing its creative output but also ensuring its media production aligns with global environmental standards. The concept of “green jobs” within this industry extends to roles that embrace eco-friendly production practices. This includes promoting investments in energy-efficient studios, developing seamless digital workflows, and implementing green Information Communication Technology (ICT) solutions. The emphasis is on equipping professionals with skills that not only enhance productivity and global competitiveness but also contribute to a reduced environmental footprint. This forward-thinking method helps the industry cut down on expenses and increase its benefits. A major factor behind this effort is the World Bank, which has provided a notable grant of $2.7 million from the Korea-World Bank Partnership Facility (KWPF) as part of its “Bangladesh Human Capital Acceleration” program. This funding supports the integration of green skills into education and workforce development programs, alongside strengthening institutional policies and facilitating dialogue among industry practitioners. A notable component of this effort is the PostPro TalentLab, launched in May 2024, designed to equip post-production professionals with cutting-edge skills, tools, and networks, serving as an incubator for new talent and industry reform. By investing in innovation and sustainability, Bangladesh is poised to emerge as a leader in sustainable media production. This strategic focus is expected to unlock new avenues for industry growth and create substantial job opportunities, especially for youth who are not currently in education, employment, or training. It represents a constructive step towards a more dynamic, sustainable, and inclusive creative economy for the nation.
