by Bangladesh in Focus

Again, travelers are attracted to Cox’s Bazar, home to the longest sandy beach on the planet. In the past week, around 4 lakh (400,000) tourists visited, helping the local economy earn about Tk 400 crore. According to Cox’s Bazar tourism officials, accommodation, restaurants, transport, shops, and entertainment venues all saw a significant rise in income. This surge happened around Eid-ul-Azha, when city residents, students, and families traveled to the seaside for relaxation. Nearly every hotel and resort near the beach reported close to 100% occupancy. Even tomtoms, beach bike rides, souvenir stalls, and local cafés were bustling with activity. Tourist police and lifeguard teams also stepped-up safety patrols and quick medical support along the coastline. This busy week spells great news for several business sectors. Hotel rooms and resorts were fully booked. Local eateries served up to double their usual number of meals. Store owners shared that they experienced strong sales of beach equipment and memorabilia. Tour guides and boat drivers also enjoyed a full schedule of customers. Wholesalers delivering food, water, and beach supplies worked around the clock. Demand for items like flip-flops, swimwear, and umbrellas soared. Transport services such as tomtoms and jeeps carried more tourists than usual, and local drivers said their daily earnings jumped by 30 to 50 percent. The busy streets brought advantages to restaurants and snack stalls. Pop-up stalls offering fresh fruit, local snacks, and cool drinks added to the vibrant food scene. Mobile payment apps saw a spike in use as people paid for food, rides, and souvenirs digitally. Delivery services and local clinics also experienced a busy week. Government and private officials are encouraging this positive trend while keeping a careful eye on environmental and safety concerns. The Cox’s Bazar Development Authority is working to manage waste and control crowding. Tourist police are also reminding visitors to follow beach safety advice and avoid swimming in strong currents. Experts say this week’s boost in tourism shows how seasonal travel can support hundreds of local businesses and help drive long-term economic growth. If current service, safety, and marketing efforts continue, Cox’s Bazar could set a new standard for sustainable domestic tourism in Bangladesh.
