Bangladesh’s Solar Boom: A Big Leap Toward Clean Energy

by Bangladesh in Focus

Bangladesh is making exciting progress in clean energy. Just last week, the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) announced a new tender for 2.65 gigawatts (GW) of solar power projects. This move could bring large-scale solar energy to many parts of the country, helping Bangladesh reduce its use of fossil fuels and grow its green energy supply.
The tender, released in early June 2025, invites companies from Bangladesh and around the world to develop 14 new solar power plants. These solar plants will be built in different regions like Mymensingh, Chattogram, and Dinajpur. Each one will produce between 105 and 250 megawatts (MW) of electricity. Once the projects are approved, the developers will sign long-term, 20-year contracts to sell solar power to the national grid. This provides both stability for the companies and reliable green energy for the country.
The solar tender plays a crucial role in Bangladesh’s goal of generating 30% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. At the moment, Bangladesh has around 1.2 GW of solar capacity already installed, with another 2.7 GW being built. If this new 2.65 GW is added successfully, it will bring the country much closer to its goal of generating 6,000 MW of renewable power by 2025, most of it from solar.
The government is also providing strong financial support for this clean energy shift. In the national budget for 2025–2026, Tk. 22,520 crore has been set aside for the power and energy sector. The money will go toward improving the electricity network, investing in mineral resources, and supporting cleaner, more modern energy projects. In addition, a new Integrated Power Sector Master Plan has been created. This plan sets a goal of producing 3,400 MW of electricity from clean energy sources by 2028. This encompasses technologies such as solar, wind, and other forms of renewable energy. The government hopes this plan will help reduce pollution, increase energy access, and make power more affordable for everyone. Switching to solar power is not only good for the environment, but also important for Bangladesh’s economy and public health. Solar energy is clean, quiet, and safe. It also helps reduce the country’s dependence on expensive fuel imports. With strong leadership, smart planning, and support from both local and international partners, Bangladesh is lighting the way for a brighter, cleaner future.
