In a landmark move to modernize urban transportation, Chattogram is set to become the first city in Bangladesh to introduce a monorail system. On June 1, 2025, the Chattogram City Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding with a joint venture between Orascom Construction and Arab Contractors to develop the country’s inaugural monorail project.
This initiative aims to address the city’s escalating traffic congestion and enhance public transit options. The monorail system is expected to provide a sustainable and efficient mode of transportation for Chattogram’s residents, aligning with the government’s broader goals of urban development and environmental sustainability.
The project emerged from a comprehensive feasibility study initiated in January 2023, focusing on urban metro rail transit in the Chattogram Metropolitan Area. The study, concluding in June 2025, recommended the monorail as a viable solution to the city’s transportation challenges.
The monorail system will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including elevated tracks and modern stations, designed to integrate seamlessly with the city’s existing transport networks.
