by Bangladesh in Focus

On the evening of May 28, the city of Changsha in Hunan Province, China, received its first delivery of fresh mangoes from Bangladesh, total three tonnes. Upon arrival at Changsha Huanghua International Airport, customs officials promptly examined the shipping documents and phytosanitary certificates, inspecting both the packaging and the mangoes themselves. After verifying all was satisfactory, the shipment gained approval. These mangoes, which come with a geographical indication from Bangladesh, are known for their tender texture, sweetness, and delightful floral and tropical aroma. The importer, Hunan BabaiLi Holding Group, plans to distribute them through online platforms, supermarkets, and local fresh produce shops throughout China. While earlier exports from Bangladesh mainly targeted the Middle East and the EU, these mangoes are now entering the Chinese market. The importer expects to bring in over 100 tonnes in the coming year. This event marks the first arrival of fresh mangoes from Bangladesh into China. Changsha Customs provided extensive support to businesses during preparations, including policy guidance, assistance with registration, and quarantine process approvals. A dedicated ‘fresh express’ team at the airport efficiently handled logistics, kept track of flight statuses in real-time, and ensured rapid inspections upon the mangoes’ arrival. In discussions with the importer, it was revealed that they aim to import about 100 more tonnes of fresh mangoes from Bangladesh this year, targeting winter off-season sales. In July 2024, China officially allowed the import of fresh mangoes from Bangladesh. It is expected that by 2025, Bangladesh will grow nearly 2.7 million tons of mangoes. The country aims to send around 5,000 tonnes abroad, as reported by the Department of Agriculture Extension. Chapainawabganj, celebrated as the “mango capital,” is well-known for its high-quality mangoes that are free from chemicals. Recently, many local farmers have adopted Chinese bagging technology as a safer alternative to chemical pesticides. In 2024, China’s fruit trade experienced consistent growth, with exports amounting to 8.54 billion. The amount of dollars has risen, reflecting a 20.9 percent rise compared to the previous year. Additionally, imports grew to 19.45 billion U.S. dollars, reflecting a rise of 6 percent compared to last year. This year is important because it celebrates 50 years of diplomatic ties between China and Bangladesh. Recently, the economic collaboration between the two countries has significantly strengthened, with China being Bangladesh’s largest trading partner for 15 years straight.
