Bangladesh is currently acknowledged around the globe as a leading manufacturer of sustainable apparel. By May 2025, the nation proudly operates 244 green garment factories that have received certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) through the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program. Out of these, 102 have achieved the Platinum level—the most prestigious certification—while 128 carry Gold status. This milestone reflects Bangladesh’s strong dedication to sustainability in the ready-made garment (RMG) industry. Factories with LEED certification aim to lessen their environmental footprint by conserving water and energy, enhancing air quality, and ensuring improved working conditions. These initiatives protect the environment and improve the factories’ productivity and affordability. It is noteworthy to mention that Bangladesh is home to 68 of the top 100 LEED-certified factories globally, with nine of those being in the top ten. This excellent achievement solidifies the country’s status as a global frontrunner in sustainable clothing production. A prime example is Esprit Apparels Ltd in Gazipur, which recently earned Platinum certification with an impressive score of 101 based on the LEED BD+C: New Construction v4 rating system. This success illustrates the sector’s commitment to adhering to global environmental standards. According to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA), more than 550 additional factories are in the process of seeking green certification. This trend signifies a robust shift towards sustainability within the industry. This transition to green manufacturing not only supports environmental health but also boosts Bangladesh’s standing in the international marketplace. Global buyers are increasingly looking for suppliers with strong environmental practices, and Bangladesh’s role in green factories meets this growing expectation. The advancements made by Bangladesh in sustainable garment manufacturing provide a valuable example for other countries aiming to achieve a balance between economic growth and environmental stewardship.
